About Course

This art-based course has been designed by Dr Lucelle Bernadette Pillay, a practicing visual artist and specialist lecturer in higher education. This is a non accredited short course that teaches art and design methodologies to students with low focus and common executive-function difficulties. Being pedagogically flexible and adaptive, it works alongside the student's school curricula and aims to supplement holistic ability and well-being. Human Art School offers flexible, customised art sessions that meets the aptitude and creative aspiration of each individual. It aims to support scholastic life by developing conceptual and creative skills for students between the ages of 14 to 18 (grades 8-12).

Who should apply for entry?

  • A student who has a minimum of 1 hour free every week.

  • A student who enjoys creative pursuits such as drawing (traditional or digital), painting, photography, sculpture, design, making things etc.

  • A student who seeks to develop their creative thinking and making skills.

Executive-function Difficulties

Executive-function difficulties refer to problems with the brain processes we use to manage, organise and regulate our behaviour in order to achieve a goal. Think of executive functioning as the brain's project manager, it helps you decide what to do, initiates doing, keeps track of what you're doing, and enables you to finish tasks. Someone can be highly intelligent and creative but still have difficulties with executive functioning.

Common executive functions:

  1. Task initiation

  2. Planning

  3. Organisation

  4. Working memory

  5. Time management

  6. Task switching

  7. Inhibition

  8. Emotional regulation

  9. Self-monitoring

Being able to start something, even when you know what needs to be done.

Deciding what steps are needed to complete a task.

Keeping materials, information and ideas in order.

Holding information in your mind while using it.

Estimating how long something will take and managing deadlines.

Moving from one activity to another.

Resisting impulses or distractions.

Managing frustration, excitement, anxiety or disappointment.

Recognising when something isn't working and adjusting your approach.
